Finding a Little Peace Outdoors: Exploring Tanque Verde and Saguaro National Park East

Tucked along Tucson's eastern side, Tanque Verde is surrounded by some of Southern Arizona's most beautiful desert scenery. From towering saguaros and winding desert trails to the breathtaking views of the Rincon Mountains, there's no shortage of reasons to step outside and enjoy a little fresh air.
And the best part? You don't have to be an avid hiker or outdoor enthusiast to appreciate it. Sometimes, a peaceful walk, a scenic drive, or simply taking a moment to enjoy the beauty around us is all we need.
A Little Movement, A Lot of Good

There's something about getting outside that just feels good. Maybe it's the sunshine, a change of scenery, or simply stepping away from the usual routine for a while.
And staying active doesn't have to be complicated. Take a walk with a friend, wander through a local park, or find a new place to explore. You're moving your body, getting your blood flowing, and giving yourself a chance to slow down and enjoy what's around you.
It's easy to get caught up in everything we need to do, but making time for those little moments can be just as important.
A Little Exploring Around Tanque Verde

With Saguaro National Park East practically around the corner, there's plenty to explore around Tanque Verde.
Located at the base of the Rincon Mountains, the park is home to towering saguaros, prickly pear, cholla, and all kinds of desert wildlife. Keep an eye out for birds perched among the cactus arms or lizards darting across the rocks. Depending on the season, you might even catch the desert wildflowers in bloom!
The eight-mile Cactus Forest Scenic Loop Drive is a great way to take in the scenery, with several places to pull over, snap a few pictures, and enjoy the views.
Want to stretch your legs? The quarter-mile paved Desert Ecology Trail offers a shorter walk with informational signs and benches along the way.
And Saguaro National Park isn't the only place worth exploring!
Agua Caliente Park, right in the Tanque Verde area, offers a different kind of desert scenery. With its palm trees, pond, walking paths, and opportunities for birdwatching, it's a lovely place to spend a little time outdoors. You might even find yourself staying a little longer than you planned!
Don't Forget Your Water!
One thing we all know about Southern Arizona is that our sunshine doesn't take much of a break! Even as temperatures begin to cool, it's important to keep water handy when spending time outside.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults aged 65 and older are more vulnerable to heat-related health problems because their bodies may not adjust to temperature changes as easily as those of younger adults. Young children can also be more vulnerable to heat.
A few simple things to keep in mind before heading out:
Bring water along, even for a short walk or scenic outing.
Take breaks and find shade when possible.
Plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day when temperatures are high.
Drink water regularly rather than waiting until you're thirsty.
If you have medical restrictions on fluid intake, be sure to follow your healthcare provider's guidance.
Sometimes the Best Adventures Are Shared
A beautiful view is one thing, but having someone along to share it with can make the experience even better. Whether it's a familiar walking spot, a scenic drive, or somewhere you've been wanting to visit, a little company can make all the difference.
At Seniors Helping Seniors Southern Arizona, we know how important it is to continue enjoying the places and routines that make life feel like home.
Our caregivers provide companionship, transportation, and non-medical in-home assistance to older adults in Tanque Verde and throughout Southern Arizona.
Sometimes that extra support is just what someone needs to keep doing the things they enjoy.
